DVOA welcomes you to the 2001 Frontier Festival A event. This region of Pennsylvania has been rich in Orienteering history since the US Championships were held here in 1982. Daniel Boone Homestead is an area originally mapped in the summers of 1989 and 1990 by three DVOA juniors as a part of the Olympic grants that were then available. It was used for local events for a number of years, but as trails and vegetation changed, the area was abandoned as a DVOA venue. The updated map was done by Alexei Zuev and Vladimir Zherdev in January 2000. It is 1:10000 with 2.5 meter contours. French Creek West was used for orienteering by DVOA in an improved USGS form before the days of color maps. In 1982 the area was mapped to Orienteering standards in a color version, and used for the US Champs and again in April of 1984 for the Mid Atlantic Championships. The map has been updated several times over the ensuing years. The latest, and first digitized version, by Alexei Zuev and Vladimir Zherdev in January 2001. The map is a 1:15000 with 5 meter contour intervals.

Timeline

Saturday October 6 Last day to register without late fees Friday November 2 6:00PM - 10:00PM Registration & check-in at the Dutch Colony Best Western at the junction of Business 422 and the 422 bypass east of Reading. Directions: From the Turnpike exit 22 at Morgantown take 176 north, then 422 east. As 422 East merges with 422 business, be in the left lane and make a left at the first traffic light into the Best Western parking lot. From the King of Prussia exit 24, take 422 about 18 miles past Pottstown toward Reading. The motel is just beyond a Sunoco Station, both on the right. Saturday November 3 8:00AM-Noon Check-in and registration open at Daniel Boone Homestead Saturday November 3 10:00AM-Noon Day 1 starts Directions: From Best Western take 422 East 3.8 miles to Daniel Boone Road, turn left, cross westbound lanes of 422 and continue about 3Km to the park entrance. Parking will be the first left turn after entering the park. Walk to start TBD Saturday November 3 5:00-8:00PM Dinner (preregistration required) Sponsored by Troop 529, the perennial MASOC Champions. Directions: From Best Western go straight out of the lot and across 422. Follow that road to the T at the traffic light. Make a right on 724 and go a block then another right. Within 300 meters, bear right into the church parking lot. Church hall will seat about 100 at a time so dinner will be served over a three hour period to accomodate all that wish to attend. Sunday November 4 9:00AM - Noon Check in and registration open at French Creek State Park Sunday November 4 9:00AM - Noon Day 2 starts Directions: From Best Western take 422 East 3.3 miles to Traffic light at Route 82, turn right, cross a bridge and make a left at the second light on Rt. 724. Turn Right On Chestnut Street (Rt. 345) and continue out 345 about 4 miles to the park. Bear right at the "Y" on to Park Road and follow the O signs to parking. Walk to start TBD. Sunday November 4 2:00PM Awards near the day 2 registration area.

Electronic Punching

All courses will require electronic punching. E-punches will be available for rent. They can also be purchased from most vendors of Orienteering equipment.

String O: Will be available near registration both days. Recreational Courses: White and Yellow will be available after all A event competitors have been started on those courses.

US Junior Team Lunch Concession

The Junior team will provide a lunch concession both Saturday and Sunday. Look for them after you finish your run. Times: Sat: 11:00am to 3:00pm Sun: 10:00am until start of awards

Along Rt. 422 Chinese: China Penn, in a shopping center just down Business 422 West of the Best Western. Nice Place: Charlie's, about 2 miles east of Daniel Boone Road Fast Food: MacDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell and others are all in the first couple miles East of the Best Western. Pizza: DiScala's on First street in Birdsboro. Get the square Sicilian Special, and call Ed Scott to help you finish! Morgantown Family restaurant: Windmill, at the junction of 23 and 10 west of town. Huge buffet: Shady Maple, west of Morgantown between Goodville and Blue Ball.
