Head south on PA 534 East following signs for Hickory Run State Park. At the stop sign, after about 2 miles, there is a sharp left to stay on PA 534 East. Go approximately 4 more miles on PA 534 East to the campground entrance. (It is past the park office on your right and the entrance to the Sand Spring Lake Day Use Area on the left.) There will be O signs marking the entrance to the campground. Please follow the directions of parking attendants. - Fund Raisers for US Teams
-
To enhance the evening after a great day of orienteering the US Teams are offering two different types of entertainment as fundraisers for their teams.
The Senior Team is putting together a Wine and Cheese social at the Event Center Saturday evening from 4:30 to 6:30 in the meeting room with the cost at $8.00 a person. So come out and discuss your course from Saturday while enjoying a glass of wine with your fellow orienteers before going to dinner.
The Junior team is taking over the meeting room at 7:00pm for a night of games and fun. Bring your favorite board or card game to share or teach to others and have a great time together with your family and friends. The Game night is from 7:00pm to about 9:00pm with the juniors providing some cider and snacks for everyone's enjoyment. The cost is $3.00 a person or $8.00 for a family of 4.
Just a reminder that we gain an hour of sleep this night so playing games until 9:00pm is like playing to 8:00pm so everyone can have some fun and still get plenty of sleep.
The senior team would like for interested person to contact Janet Porter by November 2 to reserve a spot at the Wine social and so that enough Wine and cheese can be purchased.
See you there!
The US Teams - Preview Map: Sand Spring Lake
-
The Sand Spring Lake map was a remapping of part of Hickory Run State Park; it was completed in the spring of 2008 and used for the Team Trials middle distance courses at the A-event held in May of that year. The terrain of all the middle courses for this 2010 event is similar to the part of the terrain on the Sand Spring Lake map used for the middle courses in 2008. In addition, the Brown and GreenY long courses use terrain most similar to this map.
While the terrain is similar, there is, however, a significant difference in the mapping of vegetation, specifically of rhododendron. On the 2008 Sand Spring Lake map, the rhododendron is almost universally mapped as dark green (fight) regardless of the actual runnability of the particular stand of rhododendron. In this way, the clumps stand out visually on the map and are easy to use for navigational purposes, but there is no information about how easy it is to pass through the vegetation.
The new maps also have substantial quantities of rhododendron. This time though, stands of rhododendron are mapped according to runnability. Thus, some rhododendron groves are mapped as light green, some as medium green and some as dark green. Small stands of rhododendron are still generally mapped as dark green dots (bush symbol, ISOM #420) or green blobs. Medium and large stands are mapped according to runnability. Some stands that have defined boundaries may be enhanced with a vegetation boundary symbol.
Preview maps are $6.00 if mailed and $4.00 if picked up at registration. Send requests for Sand Spring Lake maps via email to the Registrar, payment to be made at packet pickup. No maps will be mailed for requests received after October 29.
- Model Event Map
-
The terrain on the model event map is most relevant for the Orange, GreenX, Red and Blue long courses (Sunday courses). The model area showcases one of the unique features of the terrain used for these courses – large numbers of small knolls and depressions. Only the largest ones are mapped and they appear on the map as dot knolls, u-depressions, broken ground and micro-contours.
You may download the pdf of the model map and print your own copy. The file is two pages and includes a 1:10,000 version on the first page and a 1:5000 version on the second. Laser copies of the map may be purchased for $2.00; requests should be emailed to the Registrar by October 29. These copies can be picked up and paid for at packet pickup.
The model event will be open Friday Nov. 5 and Saturday Nov. 6. Controls will be in place no later than 2pm on Friday.

- Safety Vests
-
Safety in the Woods: safety colors required.
Pennsylvania allows small-game hunting on Saturdays in the area of the middle-distance event. We will post signs in the parking areas frequently used by hunters informing them of the o-event. However, participants in the middle-distance competition will be required to wear pieces of brightly colored clothing, preferably blaze (fluorescent) orange. (Although the White course is entirely in the no-hunting zone, the requirement also applies to those on the White course.) No starts to anyone not wearing significant amounts of orange or other bright colors. Provide your own or purchase a safety vest for $3.00 at registration table at the event.
Note: the start crew will be armed with copious quantities of orange duct tape. If you don't want to be decorated on their terms, please be sure you're dressed appropriately before you get to the start area.
- T-Shirts

There will be a limited number of Hickory Run Rocks cotton, long-sleeve t-shirts for sale at registration and packet pickup. Colors (black, dark chocolate and navy ). They will be $15.00. Plan on picking up a memento of this sure to be great event. - Accommodations
