Course Setter Notes: Saturday, French Creek North Map
Sandy Fillebrown

The terrain at French Creek being used this weekend consists of a few large hills and the surrounding slopes including the campground area.  There is a minimal but well established trail network outside of the campground loops.  There is some contour detail, but most features are point features: numerous charcoal terraces, circle ditches (remains of collier’s huts), ditches (many are remains of the old colliers roads), boulders, depressions and areas of stony ground.

Please note that hunting is allowed in many areas of French Creek State Park on Saturday.  While the immediate vicinity of the campgrounds is closed to hunting, most of the area the courses traverse is open to hunting.  We strongly recommend that you wear brightly colored clothing while out on your courses.

All courses have a common first control, #101.  It is north, up the large trail, from the start triangle but out of sight, over the top of the hill.  There will be 3 SI units at this control so there should be no delays in being able to punch.

White has a streamered leg from control #2 to #3 along an indistinct trail.

Description: CircleDitchSymbol.jpgThe circle ditch is a non-standard map symbol.  It is a series of small brown dots in a circle as shown to the right.

Description: ModelAreaMap.jpgFor those unfamiliar with charcoal terraces and circle ditches, there is a good example of each located within walking distance of the Saturday parking.  The map to the left shows their location.  The charcoal terrace that is circled on this map exhibits the distinguishing characteristics of a platform: a large, round flat area cut into a slope so that there is a somewhat well-defined rim.  Note that this map snippet contains sections that have NOT been updated and the vegetation is far greener in the terrain than indicated.  While you’re welcome to go into the areas on this map snippet, be aware that nasty vegetation covers a good deal of what is mapped as white woods and that many of the mapped charcoal terraces are somewhat vague and/or covered in briars.

The area shown may be used to warm up.  All areas not shown on this map are out of bounds.

Day 2. Hay Creek Classic

Course Setter: Ed Scott
Mapper: Vladimir Zherdev
Busing: There will be an approximately 15 min bus ride to the start, with a 250-meter walk to the start from the bus stop. Please plan accordingly.

Course Setter Notes: Sunday, Hay Creek
Ed Scott

The Hay Creek Watershed property is adjacent to French Creek State Park and has similar topography. The map is bisected by the Hay Creek, which forms a deep valley that crosses the map diagonally.  Like French Creek, there are numerous charcoal terraces, circle ditches (remains of collier’s huts), ditches (remains of the old colliers roads), boulders, and areas of stony ground.

The trail system consists of old roads, logging roads, and smaller trails.  Many indistinct trails exist from some logging 20-30 years ago.  They are very useful, but also very easy to miss.

There are areas of green on the map. They need to be respected, but not feared.  Most of the initial ribbons were hung in shorts.

Only Red and Blue will cross the Hay Creek. The first crossing is designed to provide access to the only bridge that is in play today.  Check the water level as you cross. The return trip offers the option to wade or not to wade.

There are three water stops marked on every map that are not associated with a control point. White, Yellow, Green X, Green Y, Red, & Blue may want to consider one of more of these stops.

Dogs

Attention all dog lovers/owners coming to the 2013 Orienteering Fall Festival at French Creek State Park/Hay Creek Watershed:

We want you to know, we love dogs and want to keep them safe as well as our participants. French Creek State Park is not a private park and requires all dogs to be on leashes. We are not the only people allowed at French Creek so there is potentially other families/hikers with dogs. Sunday the property for parking is at a High School and there are other activities scheduled there that date so we do no want the dogs off leash and running freely in any open field areas and parking lots.

At the Event Sites we would appreciate it if all dogs were kept on their leash and kept reasonably away from Start, Finish, The Food Tent, Download and the Junior Area. Also, for the safety of the dogs, please have them clear of bus pick up/drop off on Sunday. Please realize, if there is any dogs approaching your dog we would prefer the altercation to be where it's least congested.

At Wine Tasting and Dinner, we would appreciate it if the dogs remained safe in your vehicle.

Also, OUSA has made it a rule that no dogs are allowed on the Courses at an A Event. We will be standing by that rule for the weekend as well.

We cannot allow any dogs to ride on the Buses on Sunday.

In closing, we would appreciate if you leave no trace and use a doggy bag when appropriate and dispose of same in a proper trash container.
