Map & Course Notes
Westmoreland Sanctuary
- Vegetation - predominantly open hardwood forest, with a few clearings, relatively small areas of Japanese Barberry bushes, mapped as vertical green lines. Not too many trees down from recent storms. Rootstocks are mapped using green cross symbol, only 1.5 meter or higher rootstocks are mapped.
- Water features - all streams are crossable, some wetlands and marshes are well mapped and some will be marked out bounds, due to the hatching activities in the spring. Courses are designed to avoid protected wetlands.
- Rock - fair amount of cliffs and boulders of various sizes, mapped to IOF standards (cliff face has to be at least 1 m high, and 6 m long to be mapped, boulder - at least 1 m high)
- Topography - glaciated hills with up to 100 m relative height, some steep, usually rocky slopes.
- Manmade features - well developed trail and stone wall network, cairns.
• Sanctuary's territory is surrounded by private property, clearly marked on the map in olive green, please respect private property, stay away from it.
- Map - 1:10,000 scale, Sm contours for Blue, Red, Green and Orange courses. 1:7,500 for Brown, Yellow and White . First edition of this map dates to 1984, field work was done by a number of Westchester Orienteering Club volunteers with coordination and drafting by Eric Weyman. Latest version of the map was done in 2014, by Greg Balter, using Westchester County LIDAR data and Aerial Photography from 2013. Field-checking was done by Geof Connor and Greg Balter in 2015. Geof updated trail network since, at least once a year. Last time this map was used by HVO for regional JROTC Event in November of 2017.
