Training Opportunities and Other Events

The US Team is sponsoring training sessions the week days before and after NAOC.  Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (WCOC) is hosting two days of racing the weekend after NAOC.  Hudson Valley Orienteering (HVO) has plans for races the weekend before NAOC, including a race in Central Park in New York City, but is awaiting final permissions.

This map shows the locations of the different venues being used for the trainings and the races being held the weekend before and the weekend after NAOC.

Hudson Valley Orienteering Events

HVO has plans for orienteering races on Saturday, October 13 at Ward Pound Ridge celebrating the 40 year anniversary of the 1972 US Championship held at that park.  There are also tentative plans for a sprint race in Central Park in New York City on Sunday, October 14, but they are awaiting final permissions.  More details will be posted as they become available.

US Team Sponsored Training

The US Orienteering Team is organizing  a Training Camp on maps from WOC 1993 at beautiful Harriman State Park (close to New York City) and other high-quality maps in the Hudson Valley.

There will be 10 individual self-serve training exercises available, each with pre-printed maps. The controls will be out for the duration of the training camp, so you can decide when to do which session.   A variety of exercises will be offered, including getting the chance to re-run WOC 1993 courses. This is a perfect opportunity for a high-level training camp with your club or a few relaxing days of orienteering with friends or family. The cost will be $10 per training session per person or $80 for all 10.  Packets with training materials will be mailed to participants if ordered by October 1, 2012.

Previous training: DVOA local event

DVOA held a successful training event in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on September 18, 2011.

Most of the terrain in the Delaware Water Gap NRA is currently embargoed for orienteering until the 2012 North American Orienteering Championships (NAOC).  The small piece of the Stuckey Pond map used for this training event is the one mapped area open for training.  It will be the area used as a model event for NAOC.
